Previously On…

I’m counting down the days for WWE’s Netflix deal to begin, purely so I can judge whether or not it was worth it.

Obviously, it’s worth it from the WWE’s perspective, but if you’re a long-term fan who’s hoping for a weekly TV show that isn’t interrupted by adverts every five minutes AND every time a little momentum is built with the story being told on the screen, it could go either way.

We now join Michael Cole and Wade Barrett at this month’s marketing slut of a venue, the Uber Arena.

Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens (Undisputed Title)

WWE Bash in Berlin Results (2024): Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens

Winner: Cody Rhodes (pinfall)

Cody and Kevin went into the match with mutual respect for each other, but those feelings started to fade as time went on.

Honestly, it was hard to get into this as both guys are baby faces, the chances of Cody losing his belt at this junction are near-impossible and the crowd were forcing all their favourite chants out as early as possible, especially during moments that weren’t awesome.

Cody’s dodgy knee gave in, which caused Owens to set his sights on it. However, KO hesitated and followed Rhodes to the outside. Owens was about to hit Cody with the powerbomb onto the apron, but he thought better of that too.

Before anyone could say “Oh, just like that time with Roddy Piper and the ringbell”, they worked their way back in the ring and Cody hit two Cross-Rhodes. Before he could hit a third, Owens got on the offence and went for a Swanton Bomb, but landed on Rhodes’ knees. Cody then hit a single Cross-Rhodes, which (somehow) was enough to retain his title.

Post-match, both men celebrated in the ring as Owens was visibly disappointed and his inevitable turn lurked around the corner.

Jade Cargill & Bianca Belair vs. The Unholy Union (Women’s Tag Title)

Cargill & Belair vs. Unholy Unity

Winners: Bianca Belair & Jade Cargill (pinfall)

The champs kept on top of Belair for most of the match, sneaking and cheating behind the ref’s back.

Jade Cargill made the hot tag and went on a rampage until all four women were in the ring. Once things calmed down, Jade and Bianca hit their double-team finish on the unconvincing one Isla Dawn and we crowned new women’s tag champions.

We’re not in Scotland any more, lassies. No more freebies for ye.

CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre (Strap Match)

WWE Bash in Berlin Results (2024): CM Punk vs. Drew McIntye

Winner: CM Punk

Drew blindsided Punk during his entrance and fitted the strap on his opponent himself.

They then proceeded to whip the piss out of each other in and around the ring.

As well as the match already having a gimmick in the form of the competitors being tethered to each other, each corner had a pair of lights attached to indicate who had touched that corner. Not enough for you? Well, you’re in for a treat as even more gimmicks were introduced when tables and chairs were brought into the ring. It looked like a convoluted gameshow where slime was expected to fall from the ceiling at any moment.

Punk made Drew tap to the Sharpshooter, but due to the stipulation, that didn’t end the match.

After a struggle for control, Punk hit the Go To Sleep four times and managed to touch all four corners to win the match. He also got his cheap little bracelet back too.

Their feud now stands at one win apiece.

Damian Priest & Rhea Ripley vs. Liv Morgan & Dominik Mysterio

Priest & Ripley vs. Morgan & Dominik

Winners: Rhea Ripley and Damian Priest (pinfall)

Mixed tags in WWE are dumb. You build momentum and wear down your opponent, you tag your partner so you can get some of your breath/energy back, but your weakened opponent switches out too and your match is essentially reset while a second begins. Dumb.

Most of the bout was Dominik and Damian, with Liv taking cheap shots when possible.

The crowd got really loud when Rhea finally got her hands on Dom, but Mid Morgan took advantage of the distraction.

The rest of Judgment Day got involved and helped turn the tide, but the faces eventually got back on top.

Rhea hit the Riptide on Morgan for the win.

Gunther vs. Randy Orton (World Title)

WWE Bash in Berlin Results (2024): Gunther vs. Randy Orton

Winner: Gunther (pinfall)

Orton had his old-school red attire on tonight as he intended on killing a living legend.

Gunther isn’t often the smaller of the two men, but Orton is an absolute meathead now and was able to prevent a large portion of the usual smothering.

Orton worked on the right arm/shoulder of Gunther to nullify a lot of the champ’s offence.

After a gruelling back and forth of power moves, hard-hitting chops and near-falls, Orton’s final attempt at an RKO was countered by Gunther locking in a sleeper and wrapping himself around the challenger. Orton passed out and the Ring General’s hand was raised in victory.

And Another Thing…

The number of adverts was a reduced improvement, but there was signage for a video game throughout Punk and Drew’s strap match. I’m glad we know where WWE’s priorities remain.

During the mixed tag mess, WWE exchanged cash for the humiliation of getting the stench of the new Star Wars game on them too. Bad times.

Lastly, as I predicted when WWE first pointed out the apparent spectacle of them, these special guest crowds are (for the most part) shite. Their general energy is welcome as it makes what’s happening seem special, but once the show starts, the audience goes into business for themselves.

To reuse an analogy of mine, they’re like indy/AEW wrestlers going through their checklist of spots/chants, making sure they get all their stuff in, even if the right time for it never appeared.

OMG, the crowd counted along in their native tongue!?!?! How original and ground-breaking.

OMG, they were derailing the action and chanting songs in a different language, causing the commentary team to research and report what we could hear; how enriching!!!

OMG, there was a distracting Mexican wave during the main event, making it all about them. How incredible!

</sarcasm>

Luckily, during the last match, Orton was able to refocus them and get things back on track, but these “first time at this location in X years” setups are starting to feel more like televised house shows and Raws after ‘Mania, as opposed to grateful fans enjoying a premium live event coming to their doorstep.
